SENSOJI

  • Senso-ji Temple (金龍山浅草寺) is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, officially known as 金龍山浅草寺 (Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji).
  • It is dedicated to Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, and is also known as Asakusa Kannon. The temple’s history dates back to the Asuka period, when two brothers discovered a sacred statue of Kannon while fishing in the nearby Sumida River. They built a temple to enshrine the statue, and it has been a place of worship ever since.Senso-ji is located in the Asakusa district, which retains an old-world charm with traditional craft shops and sweet vendors lining the bustling Nakamise-dori street. The temple complex includes the Main Hall, the Five-Storied Pagoda, and the iconic Thunder Gate (Kaminarimon) with its massive red lantern.Visitors can participate in daily rituals, prayers, and blessings at the temple.
